I hope you will find this useful and help you whenever you are shopping for personal care products.

Key Terms Used In the Ingredients Glossary

Here are some terms that you will see throughout the ingredients glossary that will help you better understand the function or benefit of particular ingredients.

Humectant - Any substance that is added to another substance to keep it moist. Humectants are used in skin and hair-care products to keep products moist, stable and improve their texture. Some also can reduce the growth of bacteria and prevent spoilage. Some common humectants include propylene glycol, glycerin, urea, butylene glycol, hexylene glycol, hyaluronic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids and sorbitol.

Surfactant - They are critical to the successful formulation of cosmetic and personal care products. Most cosmetic products are made of oil and water-based ingredients. Since oil is not normally compatible with water, one way surfactants help with this problem is by acting as emulsifiers. Since surfactants are chemicals with both oil-seeking and water-seeking components, they can stabilize oil and water mixtures, allowing them to stay together without separating. Without surfactant emulsifiers, products would separate.

Emulsifier - A mixture of two or more liquids that are normally nonmixable or unblendable. It can be two liquids mixed together or a liquid and solid. Emulsifying agents are often used to help form the emulsion and stabilizing agents are used to keep the resulting emulsion from separating. The most common emulsions are oil-in-water emulsions (where oil droplets are dispersed in water) and water-in-oil emulsions (where water droplets are dispersed in oil). The word "emulsion" comes from the Latin word for "to milk", as milk is an emulsion of milk fat and water, among other components.

Astringent - A chemical compound that causes tissues to tighten and constrict. Astringents are also referred to as toners. They’re frequently used after cleansing to remove oils and cosmetic residue that remain on the skin. They also have a mild exfoliating effect, meaning they help to remove dead skin cells that build up on the surface of the skin and make it appear dull. Some astringents also have anti-bacterial effects. Some astringents are alcohol-based, while others are free of alcohol. Two common examples are calamine lotion and witch hazel.

Emollient - Helps to fill in the spaces between skin cells making the skin feel softer and smoother.
